Poem: Pleasures of Food and Love

Pleasures of Food and Love

What a feeling it is
Biting into a plump red tomato
Feeling your teeth sink in the tender meat
Licking your fingers dry from the sweet-sour juice

What a feeling it must be
To know the heart of the one you love
To penetrate another’s being, another’s heart
To share in the joy of the fleshly union of two spirits

What a feeling it is
Biting into a glistening and round cream puff
Nibbling the outsides to save the cream for last
Drowning in the squishy feel of the custard in your mouth

What a feeling it must be
To push deep into your beloved’s mind
To plunge into the depths of another’s thoughts, actions
To thrust yourself forcefully into your love’s consciousness

What a feeling it is
Biting into a tempting pomegranate
Playing with the bloody pearls on your tongue
Drinking in the fresh thick liquid, careful not to spill

What a feeling it must be
To spread your inhibitions wide open
To dive right into the pleasure of falling in love
To ravish and be ravished by the one who owns your heart

What a feeling it is
To consume the bread of flesh in meditation
To down manna with the offered wine, smooth, dry, and heavy
To clasp your mouth shut to swallow, filling up with the grace of Him that is Love
